PRESENTATION

THEATRA began within the context of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) upon the initiative of Professor Miranda Skoulatou.

A few years later, in 2015, a new group emerged as an association that regrouped  culture enthusiasts of various ages and horizons: THEATRA II.

The new group took up the task of researching into the subject of “Space in ancient Greek drama and contemporary theatre”. THEATRA II is not a theatre company. It is a group of researchers whose main objective is to explore the links between the analysis of the theatrical text and its notions and their “mise en espace”.

"MISE EN ESPACE"

Definition

MISE EN ESPACE” means creating ane  structuring the theatrical space. It is an experimental project, a search for the structure of space based on the meaning of the text. It is the creation of a place where drama unfolds in accordance with its own meaning. A topos that can carry the text.

The project takes the following into consideration:

  • Α. The theatrical space in its totality: closed/open-air theatre.

  • Β. Τhe position of the spectators with respect to the universe of the stage.

  • C. Τhe creation of a consistent scenic space based on the ideas of the play and in harmony with them.

Τhe means used for the construction of space (points, lines, surfaces, volumes) become the tools for its structure and, as a result, they can form the basis of our experiment:

  •   Learn how to structure this space from elements that constitute the    ancient drama, e.g. the movements of the Chorus.

  • Question the organization of the space and its effects on the transmission of the text’s ideas.

  • Research the structure from simple elements even before a possible staging.

  •   Reflect on the association between text and space and propose a great number of possibilities.

Thinking through the process should also be carried out by people who are not used to working on space. The combination, the junction of multiple viewpoints is really interesting, given that the interogation about meaning is viewed again from different angles.

The THEATRA II team organizes every year courses and seminars on these subjects and on the different techniques of space structuring.
