Heraklion/Archanes 2019

A Seminar-Workshop bilingual French-Greek, was organized on the Euripides' Suppliant women in Crete  from the 1st to the 7th July 2019 by the team of THEATRA II into the frame of the reserche on the stage sitting "mise en espace" of the ancient theater. The activities were organized according two axes:

  - A seminar dedicated to the study of the tragedy from the 1st till the 3d July

from 10am to 14pm, into the auditorium of the 3d General High School of Heraklion.

  - Workshops done by Miranda Skoulatou every afternoon into the open theater of Fourni, near Archanes: experiments for the creation of the space, repetitions of the scenes and the movements of the chorus, sound settings and the original music of Nikos Fotiou in order to prepare the performanes.

With the participation of Anastase Rouillé.

  • Two presentations/performances of the Euripides' Suppliant women have taken place:

  - The 5th of July into the open theater Manos Hadjidakis at Heraklion.

  - The 6th of July into the open theater of Fourni.

With the participation in this work of research, stage setting "mise en espace", and theatrical game:

  - The whole team of THEATRA II

  - The students of the scool "Day's theater" " theatro tis imeras" of the Heraklion branch: Popi Papadaki, Charoula Mavraki, Stella Bouboulaki.

  - And Marianna Travagiaki, Erasmia Boulitsaki, Thanassis Nipirakis.

  • Program of the Seminar:

Monday 1st July

  - "Analysis of the structure of Euripides' Suppliant women in order to research the space stage setting "mise en espace"of the tragedy" by Sylvie Braquet and Miranda Skoulatou.

Tuesday 2nd July

  - " The womens' mourning into the city: the example of the Suppliants' women" by Sylvie Braquet.

  - "Dead people without burial and the wright of interference" by Jacqueline Razgonnikoff.

  - "The part of the ancient drama into the scholar teaching and his approach from the spaces'rythmic " Katerina Saltaoura.

Wednesday 3d July

  - "Theater and politics into the Euripides' Suppliants women" by Odile Gandon-Maj.

  - "Euripides and his work" by Jacqueline Razgonnikoff.

 - "The theatrical dimension of ancient drama and its approach through the choral" by Katerina Maria Saltaoura

  - "The supplication into the Euripides' tragedy" by Katerina Ladianou

Every conference was followed by a discussion with the public. At the end of the Seminar a round table was organized and the synthesis.

ARCHANES - July 2018

A Seminar-workshop was organized on the Euripides' Suppliant women from

Saturday 30 June to Saturday 7 July in Crete, Archanes (small town located in 12 Km from Heraklion)

Every morning (from 10am to 14pm) was dedicated to the textual analysis of Euripides' Suppliant women as well as to the conferences according the following program:

 - "A visit to Eleusis" with references to the film of Filippos Koutsaftis The sad

rock. by Jacqueline Razgonnikoff

  - "Dead people without burial and the wright of interference" by Jacqueline Razgonnikoff

 - "Thoughts about the ancient  theater and the Euripides' Suppliant women by

Athina Kavoulaki, from Cretan University.

- "The mourning of women at the test of the city in the Euripides' by Sylvie Braquet.

Maria Fragi, of the University of Patras has organized a workshop in three mornings:

  1. "The body, the speech and the expression"

  2. "The orality"

  3. "The dramatic speech in the ancient theater"

Every evening (from 17pm to 21pm) the participants was invited at the theater

of Fourni in order to propose a stage setting "mise en espace" of the part of the tragedy studied in the morning. Every proposition was taken in photo in order to discuss, examine the most adapted on the text or find a new one. This will be our work in the next winter 2018-2019 meetings in order to prepare the performance in July 2019

The project's objectives

  - Structure the theatrical space according the textual meaning ( ancient theater and philology)

  -  Associate theatrical theorists' and practitioners' thouths about the notion of space (Spaces of the ancient drama and actual stage)

Time organization:

  - mornings: conferences, round tables, work on the text

  - afternoons: experiments into the theater, stage sitting "mise en espace"of textual chosen parts.

 

ARCHANES/NEAPOLI July 2017

A Seminar and workshop was organized from 2 till 9 July 2017 into the open theater of Fourni and Neapoli. The point was not only to prepare the Antigones' performance, but also to show the choice of the previous research.

The first conference was given at Neapolis the 29th of Jun in order to present the project and to remind the conditions of the ancient performance and the history of the thebaine line.

After the team was installed at Archanes and the program was the same.

  • The mornings were dedicated to conferences of the followings subjects:

  - "One performance at Vth century before J.C."

  - "The thebaine foundation of the city , Dionysos and the Labdacides"

  - "Sophocles and his historical context"

  - "The music and dance in the performance"

  - "The birth of the tragedy" with the collaboration of Maria Frangi of the Patras University.

Students of the Cretan University and members of the school "the theatrical play" was present.

  • The afternoons were dedicated at the preparation of the performance 

of Sophocles' Antigone based on the spaces of the tragedy represented by the chorus movements and a minimum of accessories. The choice was to represent all the parts of the tragedy in modern Greek except the first strophe of the 3d Stasimon the most famous on the glory of Eros who was said in ancient Greek.

The results of this work were: two performances who took place, one at the theater of Fourni the 8th of July and the other in a small theater at Neapolis the 9th of July.

This common experience of seven persons coming from France and twenty

locals give hope for a future collaboration on the great events founders of the

European culture.

We thank particularly Maria Houhou director for her presence and her help

for the performances.

ARCHANES September 2016

The research team THEATRA II has organized a seminar - workshop on Sophocles' Antigone from September 20 to September 30, 2016 in Greece, in Archanes.

From 20 to 30 of September, according the organization of Miranda Skoulatou who has created THEATRA II, we have been in a Cretan village Archanes in 12 km from Heraklion.

  • The mornings: Were dedicated to the textual analysis of parts of the

tragedy already chosen in Paris. Textual analysis and identification of spaces

in order to do the propositions of stage sitting into the theater the  afternoon.

This analysis was done from the ancient Greec-French translation of Paul Mazon (editor les Belles-Lettres).

Some  students of the theatrical play of the "Theater of the day" at Heraklion was with us during this experience and they have contributed with their "Greek experience" of the theatrical performance

  • The afrernoons :were dedicated to the experiments to define the space

into the ancient-like open theater constructed into the wood at Archanes. This small theater helped us to experiment the real form of an ancient theater with our bodies.

  • Special interventions have been done at the beginning of the evening, of the team members and was useful for going more deep fully into the comprehension of the text and his theatrical meaning.

  - " The objectives of the research and the stage construction" by Miranda Skoulatou 

  - The confrontation of men and women in Sophocles' Antigone by Sylvie Braquet

 - "Antigone in the thinking and the literature of yesterday and now" by Jacqueline Razgonnikoff.

-  "Creation of light: the part of Antigone for the space construction" by Gerald

Korlikow.

- The performative space: the Antigone' grave like a space of hospitality" by Adonis Volanakis

The communications done in French or English, was translated in Greek for the local people, by Miranda Skoulatou and Andromaque Montzoli.

A short performance of parts of the tragedy was presented at the theater by the students of "theatrical play" with the direction of Andromaque Montzoli. The text was said in ancient Greek, modern Greek and French. 

A new project was elaborated: continue the research and do a new translation in order to publish it.
